What would we do without dental fillings?!

Dental fillings are a wonderful restorative solution for teeth that are experiencing decay. They fill the tooth where a cavity has formed and protect it from further decay. Without this treatment, the tooth would continue to decay, and would eventually be at risk for loss as the damage progressively makes its way to the tooth’s root.

There are typically two types of dental fillings used to treat cavities. Our downtown Toronto dentist uses either composite white fillings, or traditional silver fillings. But how do dentists and patients choose between the two? Well, it’s simple! By taking these factors into consideration, the appropriate choice can be made:

The appearance

White fillings are preferred by a majority of our patients because they blend seamlessly with the natural colour of the teeth. Amalgam fillings are much more obvious, which is why they’re often used to fill back teeth where they’re less likely to be seen.

The strength

Traditional amalgam fillings are composed of a mixture of silver, mercury, copper and tin. White fillings, on the other hand, are made of plastic resin and glass particles. Silver fillings typically last longer than white fillings, but this isn’t always the case, as today’s composite materials are much more resilient than those of the past. This may be an important factor for some patients who want to go as long as they can before needing to have their cavity refilled.

The cost

White fillings are more pricey than silver fillings, however, many people agree that the tooth-coloured quality of white fillings makes it well worth the extra penny.

The person’s medical history

Any sensitivities or allergies to certain materials should be taken into consideration. For example, some patients have a mercury allergy – in which case white fillings would be the right choice for them.

While it’s important to consider these factors when deciding on a dental filling material, your dentist may suggest one over the other. Every mouth and every case is different, so the professional opinion of your dentist is always one you should listen to.

You can trust our dental team!

While prevention is the best bet against cavities, decay can unfortunately still occur in relatively healthy mouths. If you think you may be in need of a dental filling, don’t waste any more time! Call our dental clinic today – we can help you!

Is Your Smile At Risk For Root Decay? https://katbaboptodent.com/is-your-smile-at-risk-for-root-decay/ Wed, 21 Apr 2021 14:50:34 +0000 https://katbaboptodent.com/?p=3895

When we think about tooth decay and cavities, we tend to think about darker spot or hole on the surface of a tooth. But, many of us don’t know that cavities can occur on the ROOT of a tooth… so long as it’s been exposed by insufficient (receded) gum tissue. This oral health issue is referred to as “root decay”.

Am I at risk for root decay?

Anyone with exposed dental roots or notable gum recession is at risk for root decay. That said, it’s primarily seniors and older adults who experience this problem the most – as their gum recession tends to be the most severe. In addition to this, the senior population tends to have a dryer mouth environment due to medication – raising their risk for root decay even higher. This is because a dry mouth lacks the #1 protector against decay: saliva.

How do I protect my smile from root decay?

Root decay is preventable through good daily oral hygiene care. This includes daily flossing, as well as GENTLE brushing twice a day, using no other than a soft bristled toothbrush. This is because aggressive or abrasive tooth cleaning is one of the main contributors to gum recession. In conjunction with diligent and gentle daily oral care, a visit to the dentist and hygienist every 6 months (or as required) will also help to ensure your gums and teeth stay in tip top shape.

A cavity that exists on the root of the tooth is treated in the same way that a cavity penetrating the enamel is treated – with a dental filling! However, timeliness is key when it comes to treating a cavity on the root. This is because the decay can reach the tooth’s pulp at a much faster rate than if it were to begin on the tooth’s surface enamel, causing irreversible damage. If root decay is discovered too late, it a root canal procedure may be the only option – or worse, tooth extraction.

How long has it been since you’ve visited the dentist and hygienist?

The Different Types Of Sedation https://katbaboptodent.com/the-different-types-of-sedation/ Sun, 21 Feb 2021 13:55:32 +0000 https://katbaboptodent.com/?p=3877

You’re in good company.

But thankfully, there is an effective way to cope with this dental worry: sedation dentistry! And our friendly downtown Toronto dentist offers four types of sedation to help you face your fears – because a healthy smile depends on it.

Minimal Sedation: Oral and Nitrous Oxide

Two forms of milder sedation include oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). With oral sedation, a pill (typically Halcion) will be provided to the patient to be taken roughly one hour before the patient’s scheduled treatment. The pill will help the patient to feel deeply relaxed and less anxious – and may even cause the patient to fall asleep. With nitrous oxide sedation, a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen is provided through a mask that is placed over the patient’s nose. The dentist is able to easily control the level of sedation administered, with the effects tending to wear off quickly. Oh, and its alternative name “laughing gas” is because it tends to do just that – make patients giggly!

Moderate Sedation: Moderate (IV) Sedation

With moderate (IV) sedation, the drug is delivered intravenously and level of sedation is controlled by the trained professional. Patients will become deeply relaxed and drowsy, and will typically fall asleep or recall nothing of their treatment when they receive this moderate level of sedation.

Deep Sedation: General Anesthesia

With deep sedation, a patient receives a sedative intravenously that essentially “puts them to sleep” – so they will not be conscious for their procedure. This type of sedation is ideal for patients with severe dental anxiety, and for certain procedures that may be more complex.

Ready to face your dental fears?

Our  team cares about both your dental and emotional wellbeing, and want to make your experience as comfortable and worry-free as possible. It’s what you and your smile deserve.
