What would we do without dental fillings?!
Dental fillings are a wonderful restorative solution for teeth that are experiencing decay. They fill the tooth where a cavity has formed and protect it from further decay. Without this treatment, the tooth would continue to decay, and would eventually be at risk for loss as the damage progressively makes its way to the tooth’s root.
There are typically two types of dental fillings used to treat cavities. Our downtown Toronto dentist uses either composite white fillings, or traditional silver fillings. But how do dentists and patients choose between the two? Well, it’s simple! By taking these factors into consideration, the appropriate choice can be made:
The appearance
White fillings are preferred by a majority of our patients because they blend seamlessly with the natural colour of the teeth. Amalgam fillings are much more obvious, which is why they’re often used to fill back teeth where they’re less likely to be seen.
The strength
Traditional amalgam fillings are composed of a mixture of silver, mercury, copper and tin. White fillings, on the other hand, are made of plastic resin and glass particles. Silver fillings typically last longer than white fillings, but this isn’t always the case, as today’s composite materials are much more resilient than those of the past. This may be an important factor for some patients who want to go as long as they can before needing to have their cavity refilled.
The cost
White fillings are more pricey than silver fillings, however, many people agree that the tooth-coloured quality of white fillings makes it well worth the extra penny.
The person’s medical history
Any sensitivities or allergies to certain materials should be taken into consideration. For example, some patients have a mercury allergy – in which case white fillings would be the right choice for them.
While it’s important to consider these factors when deciding on a dental filling material, your dentist may suggest one over the other. Every mouth and every case is different, so the professional opinion of your dentist is always one you should listen to.
