Traditional amalgam fillings are composed of a mixture of silver, mercury, copper and tin. White fillings, on the other hand, are made of plastic resin and glass particles. Silver fillings typically last longer than white fillings, but this isn\u2019t always the case, as today\u2019s composite materials are much more resilient than those of the past. This may be an important factor for some patients who want to go as long as they can before needing to have their cavity refilled.<\/p>\n
White fillings are more pricey than silver fillings, however, many people agree that the tooth-coloured quality of white fillings makes it well worth the extra penny.<\/p>\n
Any sensitivities or allergies to certain materials should be taken into consideration. For example, some patients have a mercury allergy \u2013 in which case white fillings would be the right choice for them.<\/p>\n
While it\u2019s important to consider these factors when deciding on a dental filling material, your dentist may suggest one over the other.
